For more than twenty-five years, Stephen R. Phillips has built a unique career creating memorable dramatic and comedic scores for film and television while crafting songs that have been licensed across hundreds of television series, feature films, sporting events, advertising campaigns, and streaming productions.
An award-winning composer, songwriter, and guitarist, Stephen has composed hundreds of hours of original music for scripted comedy, dramatic television, historical docudramas, documentaries, reality programming, animation, and feature films. His work has been featured across Netflix, Hulu, History, Disney Channel, Comedy Central, Bravo, National Geographic, Showtime, NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX.
Stephen received the 2005 BMI Film & Television Award for composing the main title theme to The 4400, and in 2021received the Best Original Score Award at the Vesuvius International Film Festival for his score to the award-winning short film Maggie.
His scoring work includes WASHINGTON(History/Netflix), which was later reimagined by History as a two-hour television event following its successful streaming debut on Netflix; five seasons of Port Protection Alaska(National Geographic, Hulu & Disney+); Hulu's It's All Country, executive produced by Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning, for which Stephen wrote the main title theme and appears on camera performing it; Reno 911!(Comedy Central); Good Luck Charlie(Disney Channel); Odd Mom Out(Bravo/Universal Television); and Illumination Entertainment's animated shorts Cro Minion and Binky Nelson Unpacified, along with dozens of additional television series, documentaries, feature films, and streaming productions.
Alongside his scoring career, Stephen's original songs have been placed more than 250 times across all twelve seasons of Shameless. His catalog includes more than 30,000 registered musical works, with thousands of songs licensed across hundreds of television series, feature films, sporting events, advertising campaigns, and streaming productions. Recent placements include Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, America's Funniest Home Videos, and Netflix's FUBAR.
Whether writing an intimate song or an epic orchestral score, Stephen believes the most memorable music is the music that serves the story—a philosophy that continues to guide every collaboration with filmmakers, producers, directors, editors, and music supervisors.
